Added: right-clicking within the tree area
automatically activates (places focus on) the Tree Pane, even before the tree popup menu appears .
Added: context-sensitive menu bar.
Regardless of whether the Tree or the Article Pane is active, a mere mouse-click on the menu bar now automatically places focus on either the Tree or the Article Pane, respectively to the menu item clicked
upon.
Thus, a click on menu⁄tree,
conveniently activates (places focus on) the Tree Pane, automatically enabling all respective tree menu items and tool
buttons, as well. Which Pane is currently active before you click on the menu bar is now irrelevant.
Analogously, a click on menu⁄edit,
menu⁄insert, menu⁄table, conveniently activates (places focus on) the Article Pane,
automatically enabling all respective menu items and tool buttons, as well. Again, the operation is straightforward,
whichever Pane is currently active (Tree, Article, or Accessories Pane) before you click on the menu bar.
Search

find fields.
- Note 1: If you are not an experienced user,
please use this feature with prudence in replace operations, lest you inadvertently replace far beyond what you may have
intended to; At any rate, we suggest that 'prompt on replace' be on, since hyperlinks and other hidden text attributes are included in Search and in Replace operations..
- Note 2: '*' stands for any number of characters,
in the position where this wild card character has been entered.
New: forms !
Here is an exciting addition that greatly enhances the functionality and power that you enjoy
with TreePad™.
Introduction
TreePad™ now supports the concept of forms. A form is a screen containing fields (special areas), which you can fill in with your own data.
For example, below is an illustration of the TreePad™ password manager
form, which was designed for storing a password entry.
Forms such as the one above reside in the Article Pane, each associated with an individual
node, just like any other article on TreePad™. Thus, a number of these forms, grouped under a common parent node, yields a password database that is easy to build and to manage, as further illustrated below.
How to use forms
You can use TreePad™ forms to create simple databases, address books, card indexes ... and all else that your needs or creativity may call for. Forms come in handy whenever structured data is preferable to
normal text.
In other words, forms are a very convenient asset for getting down and storing data that
share recurring patterns or structures, such as addresses, collections (books, CDs, stamps, etc.), shopping lists, appointments, special rosters (school-related records⁄notes, memberships, sports teams,
championships, etc.), recipes, patient information, product orders, clientele, employees, and so forth.
Forms currently available -- allowing you to
create a forms-based database. Each form type below is followed by its related menu item(s).
Music Collection: * menu⁄file⁄new⁄music collection
Password Manager: * menu⁄file⁄new⁄password manager (feature unique to TreePad™ SAFE and TreePad™ Business Edition, both of which offer data encryption and password protection.)
Other form alternatives will be added in future TreePad™ updates.
The menus spelled out above enable you to create a
structured database from scratch. Within this database, you can optionally
group all your entries, according to whatever distinctive feature(s) or characteristic(s) that you see fit for organizing sets of entries in classes or categories. You can also alternatively add ordinary
TreePad™ nodes⁄articles anywhere within a forms-based database.
Illustration
Thus, menu⁄file⁄new⁄password
manager allows you to convert TreePad™ into a password manager program, menu⁄file⁄new⁄music
collection allows you to convert TreePad™ into a music
database, and so forth.
TreePad™ password manager form, already illustrated with the image above, is further
elaborated below.
The menu item menu⁄file⁄new⁄password
manager creates a new file, containing the following default nodes:
a root node -- as in all TreePad™
files
a number of child nodes -- these indicate different
classes or categories, so you can group together data of the same type. For example, you may wish to assemble all e-mail
passwords under a common parent node, all web site passwords under another, all passwords
for encrypted documents under another, and so forth.
Each of these main nodes (marking different classes or categories) appears as a direct
child node of the root node. Though this is the default, you are of course able to organize, add to, rename, move, delete, etc.,
any of these 'category' or 'class' nodes. You can handle them according to your needs and preference, just the way you are
used to handling your data, regardless of the TreePad™ version(s) you have used so far.
data nodes containing the forms, themselves, in which you will store your password entries. By default, these data nodes are subjacent
to one of the 'category' nodes just mentioned in 2., above. But, once again, you are free to organize and customize your
database in the way it suits you best, just as you do regarding the standard TreePad™ nodes that you are used
to handling. You are likewise free to add⁄delete 'form' entries, much the same way as you handle article (with their respective nodes)s within a tree structure.
TreePad™ Business Edition additionally
allows you to insert any of these forms and structures within an already existing database (a TreePad™ file). That is
to say, in addition to individual data eBooks, as
illustrated thus far, you can create TreeBooks (eBooks embeded in the tree
structure of an existing database).
To start creating a TreeBook, use menu⁄tree⁄insert special, instead of the menu items appearing under menu⁄file⁄new⁄..., as detailed above.
TreePad™ Business Edition offers,
moreover, special template functions, which can interact with and splendidly complement the forms function just dealt with.
The variety of eBook and TreeBook.possibilities thus spawned, can amply provide for individual needs and creativity.
These special 'template' functions are dealt with at
the end of the current section.
TreePad™ new forms feature greatly increases the program's generous functionality as a data organizer. And, in association with
TreePad's™ high performance search engine, all information stored is always accessible in a blink.
Forms: Active fields
Some of the fields contained in the forms are
'active fields'. That is, they perform a specific action when you double click on them.
Thus, a web address field will launch your browser, whereas an email address field will activate your email program. A phone number field will likewise activate the auto-dial feature (TreePad™
Business Edition only) when double clicked.
Forms: export
A form can be exported to an XML file, in addition to .txt, .rtf, and .html files, as follows:
- to XML files, as XML-structures (i.e., a similar
format to the one appearing in the treepad article) -- Article-export only
- to HTML files, as HTML-forms -- Tree-export and Article-export
- to RTF files, as tables -- Tree-export and Article-export
- to txt files, as lines of plain text --
Tree-export and Article-export
Forms: print
A form will ordinarily be printed as a table.
The Template directory and files
TreePad's™ \templates subdirectory, now default
in the program directory, comprises two types of 'template' files, as follows:
- .tpt files (TreePad™ template files), which
are responsible for generating single node forms and managing the overall functioning of the templates-established
databases.
- .hjt files, which create forms-based databases, and
in which the data that you fill in is stored.
TreePad™ Business Edition only:
menu⁄tree⁄insert special: this dialog allows you to insert the
following into an existing database (TreePad™ file):
a single node containing a form,
a single node containing a 'TreeBook' template, or
menu⁄tree⁄insert⁄repeat last insert special: this dialog
replicates the last 'insert special' action.
Keyboard shortcut: ctrl+alt+ins. Advanced mode
Future versions of TreePad™ Business Edition will enable you to create your own forms and form-templates.

Tree node formatting and properties
Added: the format toolbar and format menu now can change the formatting of the selected tree node. Note that for applying the format toolbar or menu to the tree the tree needs to have focus. When the
article has focus, the formatting toolbar applies to the selected block text inside the article.
This means that you can now use the format toolbar to set individual node properties directly, like 'bold', 'italic', 'underline', 'strikethrough', 'font name', 'font size', 'color', 'background
color'.
Added: one can now also set the background color of each individual node, using the formatting
toolbar.

(color, style, size, font name, etc.) from a group of node captions. This makes the nodes in the selected subtree take over

(menu⁄view⁄options) choose the category 'TreePad⁄Shutdown'. More information on the TreePad Clipboard for
nodes⁄subtrees can be found here: Copying, cutting and pasting nodes and subtrees

up to a .hjt.bak file in the same directory as the TreePad data file, TreePad image files (.tpz) files are backed up to
.tpz.bak in the same directory. Auto-backup is recommended when your data file is located on a hard disk. When you have your
TreePad data file on a floppy, you might not have enough space for the auto-backup. In that case you rely on the periodical usage of the built-in manual backup function using menu⁄file⁄backup.
Images
Added: support for PNG images. PNG images can now
be imported (menu⁄insert⁄image from file) into TreePad and exported from TreePad
(menu⁄file⁄export⁄selected image).
Added: support for Windows metafiles. WMF and
EMF files can now be copied, pasted, imported and
exported.
Improved: when importing an image of type JPEG, GIF, PNG, EMF, WMF, ICO, BMP, it is stored in
its native format inside the TreePad database. Previous versions of TreePad
converted pixel images internally to bitmaps.
Added: conversions between all the supported image formats. This means that you can export an
image stored into TreePad to any other supported image type, except to an icon. For instance, a PNG image can be exported to
a JPEG image, a WMF image to a GIF or BMP. Icons can be exported to the other formats, but the other formats can not
be exported to icon (.ico) files.
Added: when clicking an image, the statusbar will display the internal image name and image
type.
Improved: smaller images will now be inserted into the article (menu⁄insert⁄image from file) and pasted (menu⁄edit⁄paste) in the correct size.
Export and images
Added: the export subtree to Web site option now
includes images! Please note that: bmp files are exported to Web site as JPEG files, ico, wmf and emf files are exported as
GIF files. You can access this feature using Menu⁄file⁄export
Added: export of an article to a HTML file now includes exporting the images. Images are exported to the same directory as the HTML file.
Added: export of an article to an RTF file now includes exporting the images. The images are
not stored inside the RTF file, but exported separately into the same directory as the RTF file and linked from the RTF
file. Programs like MS Word are able to load the RTF file and display the external images. Using MS Word, when you save the
RTF file as Word file, the images will become embedded inside the Word document.
Format
Added: menu⁄format⁄convert⁄to title case, which will convert the selected block of article text to lowercase, except for the first letter of
each word (which is converted to a capital).
Added: menu⁄format⁄convert⁄to sentence case, which will convert the selected block of article text to lowercase, except for the first letter of each sentence
(which is converted to a capital).

which will remove any leading spaces from the selected block of text. As an extra, this function also removes '>'
characters when found at the beginning of the line. This is useful when processing emails.

selected block of text. Please note that these 'Format' commands are also available through the article popup menu.

down while) dragging will create a sibling node below the target node. The new node
will contain a copy of the block of text.
Added: pressing down the alt key before (and holding
down while) dragging (in combination with any of the above three drag-and-drop actions), the dragged text block is moved
from the article into the newly created node. This means that the copied text block will be deleted from the article after the operation is completed.
Drag-and-drop of files into the article
Added: drag-and-drop of one or more files (from e.g. the Windows Explorer) into the TreePad article will create relative or absolute (default) hyperlinks to
those files from inside the article.
Added: the option for file hyperlinks which are created using drag-and-drop of files from the Windows Explorer into the article to be absolute hyperlinks, or to be
relative to the current TreePad file. To set this
option, you can go to the options screen, choose the category article⁄hyperlinks.
Drag-and-drop of files into the tree
Added: drag-and-drop of one or more files (from e.g. the Windows Explorer) onto a tree node will import those files into the tree node as one or more child nodes. The action is the same as Menu ⁄file⁄import files⁄into sub tree⁄one or more files.
Added: pressing down the ctrl key just before dropping
the file(s) onto the tree creates a (set of) sibling node(s) just above the target node.
Added: pressing down the shift key just before
dropping the file(s) onto the tree creates a (set of) sibling node(s) just below the target node.
Drag-and-drop of a block of text from another program into the article
Added: drag-and-drop of a selected text block from another program (like a Word Processor, an email program, a Web browser) into the TreePad article will insert that text into the article.
Drag-and-drop of a block of text from another program into the tree
Added: drag-and-drop of a selected text block from another program (like a Word Processor) onto a node will create a child node of the target node containing the text.
Added: holding down the ctrl key while dragging the
text block into the tree creates a sibling node just above the target node.
Added: holding down the shift key while dragging the
text block into the tree will create a sibling node below the target node.
Drag-and-drop of a hyperlink from another program into the article

URL into the tree creates a sibling node just above the target node.
Added: holding down the shift key while dragging the
URL into the tree will create a sibling node below the target node.
Tree drag-and-drop
Added: an option to disable and enable tree drag-and-drop (dragging tree nodes to another location). In the options screen, category: tree.
Insert hyperlink to file(s) dialog
Added: the option for file hyperlinks which are created using the Menu
⁄insert⁄links to files dialog to be absolute (default) hyperlinks, or relative to the current TreePad file. In the options screen, you can choose the category article⁄hyperlinks.
Automatic paste
Changed: the automatic paste menus have been moved to the 'tools' menu. Please note that the automatic paste menus are only available in advanced mode.
Added: automatic paste for the tree area. This new
feature can be very useful for pasting emails and other texts which deserve a separate tree node. When the tree has focus,
automatic paste will insert a new node into the tree, and the article of that new node will contain the pasted text. When the article is active (has focus), text is pasted into the existing article - as usual
- and no new node will be created. Images can not (yet) be pasted directly into the tree, but they can be auto pasted when
the article has focus.
Changed: article copy⁄cut are disabled as long as automatic paste is active.
Changed: the automatic paste function will be switched off after you open a new file, when you
create a new file, or when you close the current file.
More information on Automatic paste can be found here.

to be inserted. A hyperlink to the node will be inserted into the article.
Pressing 'escape' or clicking inside the tree will abort the operation.
Method 2, using copy⁄paste:
a) with Menu ⁄tree⁄copy⁄node hyperlink address, one can copy the address of the currently selected node onto TreePad Clipboard as a hyperlink.
Alternatively one can use tree pop up Menu ⁄copy⁄node hyperlink address for this.
b) then, with Menu ⁄edit⁄paste node hyperlink, one pastes the hyperlink from the TreePad Clipboard into the article. Alternatively one can use: article pop up Menu ⁄paste special⁄paste node hyperlink.
Added: status bar display of the current text cursor position inside the article. The cursor column number and line number are shown.
Wrap
Added: Menu ⁄view⁄wrap text to page:
the text is wrapped to the page (as defined in the page setup)

text is wrapped according to the current size of the article.
Catalog of files

tree⁄file catalog. One can specify whether or not to include:
* directories
* file⁄directory sizes
* free disk space and cluster size
* file⁄directory dates
* directory totals
Added, optionally: the display of the total size of files, and total used space of files, and the cluster size. The space a file uses is usually different from the file size, and depends on the disk cluster
size.
Added: by default file and directory entries contain absolute hyperlinks. Using Menu
⁄view⁄options, category: tree⁄filecatalog one can choose wether the hyperlinks are relative to the
current TreePad file, or absolute.
Article statistics

* the number of words inside the article
* the number of lines inside the article

New features in TreePad PLUS 4.5
Hyperlinks
Added: a function to create catalogs of directories and disks. A TreePad disk (or directory) catalog is a subtree representing all the files and directories on a
removable disk or inside a directory. An example of a disk catalog of a CD can be found here. This option does not import any files, just the name, size, date and location of the files.
Using Menu ⁄tree⁄insert⁄catalog of files in Advanced mode one can swiftly insert a catalog into the tree.
A disk catalog can be useful e.g. in creating a searchable database of all your removable disks (CD's, floppies, ZIP disks, etc.). Having such a database will simplify finding the right disk when you need a
certain program or data file. With this function you can also create and manage shortcuts to files and directories on your
harddisk. More information can be found in the article File, disk and directory catalogs.
Improved: when in the hyperlink insert⁄modify dialog the item 'custom link text' is not checked during modifying of a node hyperlink, the link caption is now also changed.
The 'accept' button in the hyperlink 'select tree node' dialog now also follows this logic.
New features in TreePad PLUS 4.4

on the Windows Clipboard using other programs. TreePad PLUS will automatically paste anything copied into the currently
selected article.
If one chooses Menu ⁄edit⁄automatic paste⁄plain text, all text is pasted as plain text (text formatting is removed, and no images are pasted).
If one chooses Menu ⁄edit⁄automatic paste⁄text, formatting and
images, text is pasted including formatting, images are pasted if they are separately
copied onto the Windows Clipboard.

ctrl or shift keys when selecting files in the file dialog with the mouse. Note that the hyperlinks are relative to the
TreePad data file.
Tree
Added: tree shortcut keys to change the font of the selected tree node. Ctrl+b = bold; Ctrl+i = italic; Ctrl+u = underlined.

See also Menu ⁄tree⁄paste⁄node name and Menu ⁄insert.
Tree
Added: in the options screen, one can specify the name⁄title of a node when the node is inserted. It is possible to assign the current date to the title of the newly inserted node, or the time, or date +
time, or a number according to the position in the list of sibling nodes or a custom definable text. Of course one can also
change the node name manually at any time.
Please see Menu ⁄view⁄options, then in
the options screen, choose category 'Tree⁄node options'.
Added: semi-automatic node numbering. You can number the selected subtree using Menu
⁄tree⁄number subtree or popup
menu tree⁄number subtree. You can number just the direct children (one level) or
all descendants (all levels of the subtree).

New features in TreePad PLUS 4.1.2
Article
Added: tree popup Menu ⁄copy⁄article
which copies the entire article content to clipboard.
New features in TreePad PLUS 4.1.1
HTML TreePad files
Added: a new file type, HTML TreePad files (with
extension '.htmhjt'). This type of file is similar
to the standard TreePad .hjt file type, but the difference is that all Rich Text
articles are stored as HTML articles. HTML TreePad files can be read by programs like TreePad PLUS and iTreePad.
Please note that the HTML articles inside HTML TreePad files will not retain some Rich Text
formatting elements, tabs and indents will not be preserved. Another limitation, but a temporary one, is that images are not
preserved when saving as HTML TreePad file.
In TreePad PLUS, one can use Menu ⁄file⁄save as, or Menu ⁄file⁄export files⁄from subtree to create files of this new type.
New features in TreePad PLUS 4.1
Tree
Added: the option to select different fonts⁄sizes⁄colors⁄styles for the texts of the individual
tree nodes. You can access this function using Menu ⁄tree⁄node
properties, or tree popup Menu ⁄node
properties. This new function is very useful for visually marking individual nodes and
subtrees. An option to mark individual nodes by changing the node icon will be introduced soon.
Bugfix: the occasional access violation when selecting another node should not occur anymore.
Article
Bugfix: the cursor now does not jump to the start of the article after saving to file.
Hyperlinks
Improved: the hyperlink node-select screen will now use the default tree font as specified in the options screen.
New features in TreePad PLUS 4.0.1
Images
Added: Menu ⁄insert⁄image from file.
You can insert images into the article directly from .bmp, jpg, .gif and .ico files.
Added: Menu ⁄paste image. In the previous
version images were pasted using the regular Menu ⁄edit⁄paste menu; this
created some confusion ('how do I add images?')..
Added: images can now be selected, resized and moved around
using the mouse. Please note that when you resize an image, you need to make another change in the article (like
adding and deleting a space) before the new size will be remembered when you select another
node.
Manual
Improved: the manual has been improved and rewritten by Barry Andrews.
New features in TreePad PLUS 4.0
Images
TreePad PLUS now supports images! One can paste images in the article area (using Menu ⁄edit⁄paste). All images are stored in one separate file, which has the same name as the currently active
TreePad file, but has extension '.tpz' (which means 'TreePad Zipped'). A .tpz file is a zip-compressed file containing one
or more full-color bitmap images.
Images inside the new .tpz file are compressed, this
means that bitmaps, when pasted into TreePad can be compressed by up to 99%. Many other word processing programs store
images as large strings of characters inside the text file. This is a most inefficient method of storage, and that's why TreePad PLUS takes a different approach.
There is no practical limit to the size and number of images stored in a TreePad PLUS database. A TreePad PLUS 4.x database is easily able to contain thousands of images (and hundreds of megabytes of
images).
There are a few temporary limitations though: copying images from TreePad PLUS to the clipboard is not yet possible, and images are not yet exported to Web site, RTF and HTML files, but these things will
be addressed in coming versions.
Web site export
(Menu ⁄view⁄options, Menu ⁄file⁄export files⁄from subtree)
Improved: the Web site export function now remembers the selected export directory, so you don't have to browse anymore to the same directory each time you perform an export.
Hyperlinks
Added: the option to create relative hyperlinks to
files and directories. These hyperlinks are relative to the location of the currently loaded TreePad file.
Added: an 'accept' button to the 'Select tree node' dialog, which will directly close all hyperlink dialogs, and insert a hyperlink to the selected node into the article.
Tree
Added: Ctrl+drag-and-drop for tree nodes. Pressing
the ctrl key while dragging a node, you can move a node, so that it becomes a direct sibling of the target node, positioned
directly above it. This feature functions in exactly the same manner as the existing Shift+drag-and-drop function, except that this makes the dragged node become the lower positioned next sibling of the
target node.
Added: cut subtree (Menu ⁄tree⁄cut), which
copies the subtree to clipboard before deleting it.
Article
Added to the article context menu: insert node name and insert table of contents
Article tab
Bugfix: directly after one edits the node name the caption of the article tab will be updated.
Bugfix: when in the top position, the article tab will not unexpectedly revert to the bottom position anymore after changing other settings.
Program icon
New TreePad PLUS program icon, created by Lee Katzz

automatically create a new tree (with one new node) anymore, but will show an empty tree and empty article. One can create a
new file using Menu ⁄file⁄new or the toolbar button.

save the file, before creating a new file. This way TreePad PLUS knows the name of the current file at all time, which
enables it to store⁄cache the images into the corresponding .tpz file.

Plain text Hyperlinks
Improved: plain-text hyperlinks do not need to be enclosed in double quotes anymore,
nor do they need to be totally selected anymore when you try to activate them. One exception is the case where a hyperlink contains one or more space characters. When a hyperlink contains space
characters you must either: (1) enclose the hyperlink between double quotes or (2) select the whole hyperlink before
activating it.
